Stage 5: The Ego

The shaded area in the illustration represents the emergence of consciousness and sense of self (Ego) as the child matures. That consciousness extends outwards towards the comprehension of Objective Reality. All the material interior to that area represents the unconscious dynamic functioning in each and every one of us.

We have tried to explain and illustrate that the makeup of the unconscious determines the direction and intensity of conscious desires and drives. These desires/drives may operate in a relatively normal way; or they may reflect, through symptoms, the disease of neurosis. "Psychoanalysis is exclusively a therapy for neurotics..." (Bergler)
